However, when EPDM is used in water supply applications, long-term exposure to water pressure can cause the rubber to deteriorate or deform over time. This gradual strain may eventually lead to water leakage.

In addition, residual chlorine in tap water can react with additives contained in the rubber, causing the carbon black (a reinforcing agent) to leach out. This results in what is known as the “ink phenomenon” (carbon elution), which can appear as black particles or cloudiness in the water.
