【Vulcanization Test】
Rubber "vulcanization (crosslinking)" is the chemical bonding of polymers (long-chain molecules) to form a network structure.
Through vulcanization, strong bonds are created between rubber molecules, increasing elasticity and tensile strength.
Before vulcanization, un-vulcanized rubber stretches like chewing gum and does not return to its original shape after being released.
However, vulcanized rubber forms interlinked polymer networks, which provide resilience and cause it to try to return to its original shape.
This property gives rubber its characteristic elasticity and feel.
The "vulcanization test" checks the process from the un-vulcanized state to the completion of vulcanization, ensuring there are no mistakes in material or chemical compounding.
We use this test not only as a performance evaluation tool during research and development but also as a quality control measure in mass production, performing vulcanization tests on each batch of rubber compound.
【Curelastometer】
The testing device used for vulcanization testing is called a "Curelastometer."
This device applies torsional vibration to a rubber sample at a constant temperature and pressure, measuring the force (torque) transmitted through the sample.
It is used to evaluate the vulcanization characteristics of the rubber compound.
By using this device, you can obtain the "vulcanization curve," which shows the change in torque from the un-vulcanized state to the completion of vulcanization.
Even a small change in the amount of chemicals compounded into the rubber significantly affects the vulcanization curve.
If there is any mistake in the type or amount of compounding agents, the shape of the vulcanization curve may differ, making it easy to detect.
Additionally, the curve provides information such as the vulcanization speed and the optimal vulcanization time.
It is also used when determining the vulcanization conditions for newly developed rubber materials.
